Stroud Goodwill will return on Friday, December 4, with a theatrical programme of lanterns, live music and festive entertainment planned across the town centre. The 2026 event will feature mermaids, fire-eaters, cabaret performers and other street acts, while the lantern procession is set to follow its original, longer route.
Stroud Town Council is working with the town’s arts and culture community to stage the evening for residents and visitors. The organisers say the theme this year is “SPECTACULAR”, with jugglers, stilt-walkers, puppeteers and other performers joining the programme.
What to expect at Stroud Goodwill
All roads in the town centre will be closed for the lantern procession. Visitors can also expect decorated shop windows, choirs and bands performing in the streets, and a Santa’s grotto aimed at younger visitors.
More lantern-making workshops than in previous years are planned across the parish. The workshops are part of the wider effort to involve local residents and make the festival’s lantern tradition accessible to the community.
Those wanting to continue the celebrations will be able to buy tickets for the Goodwill Afterparty at Lansdown Hall. The event is due to include cabaret and celebrity musical appearances.
How the festival is being organised
The plans follow a workshop held at the end of the summer, where artists, musicians, actors, marketers, venue managers and community organisers discussed how to preserve Stroud Goodwill’s inclusive character.
The council said it is determined to keep the festival going as community events across the UK face financial pressures, with some being reduced or cancelled. The mayor of Stroud, Cllr Louisa Stinton, praised the businesses, performers, artists and volunteers involved.
“These things do not happen by accident. They happen because wonderful people step forward, get involved, and make them happen,”
She thanked businesses providing sponsorship, performers waiving their fees, lantern artists making workshops accessible, supportive venues and volunteer marshals. She also acknowledged experienced Goodwill organisers helping the event run smoothly.
Updates, sponsorship and dates
Stroud Town Council plans to publish regular updates on its dedicated Goodwill webpage from November 1, as well as through social media. Goodwill leaflets will also be delivered to residents with the council’s autumn newsletter in the coming weeks.
Businesses can still support the celebrations through sponsorship. Companies interested in sponsoring the event can contact the council at [email protected].
