Families in Stroud will be able to explore Roman life in a quieter, more flexible setting at a special session at Museum in the Park this summer.
Revealing the Romans will take place from 10am to 11am on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in the Pavilion at Museum in the Park, Stratford Park, Stratford Road, Stroud. The session is designed for families with neurodivergent children and children with additional access requirements who need a more relaxed environment.
What children can do
Children aged over five can dress as Romans by trying on a tunic and belt, create a Roman name and learn about Roman coins by designing their own. They can also practise Roman numerals and make a paper mosaic inspired by patterns from Roman villa floors.
The session will include activities exploring Roman religion and belief, including making a Roman-style votive offering to take home. Children can also take part in a mini archaeological dig, excavating Roman objects and Roman ‘poo’ to learn about the food people ate at the time.
The organisers say the session can also support participation in the Gloucestershire Library Challenge 2026.
A flexible morning for families
Learning staff will support families as much or as little as they choose. Activities are optional and can be moved around to suit individual needs, allowing families to come and go during the session.
A chill-out zone will be available. The morning time slot was introduced following feedback from visitors, while the number of tickets has been limited to 12 child places to help maintain a relaxed environment.
The session is reserved for families with children who need this type of accessible setting, and the museum asks other visitors to understand that restriction.

Children must be accompanied by an adult, but accompanying adults do not need a ticket. Tickets cost £1 per child and must be booked in advance online or by calling 01453 763394.
