Families visiting The Museum in the Park in Stroud can meet characters from medieval Britain, design a family coat of arms and learn how to fight like a knight during a special Medieval Day on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The event will run from 10.30am to 3.30pm at the museum in Stratford Park, Stratford Road, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 4AF. Visitors can drop in throughout the day to meet historical characters, with this part of the programme free of charge.
Activities for children and families
A drop-in craft activity will run from 10.30am to 3.30pm, costing £1 per child and payable on the door. Children can make their own coat of arms or pennant flag. Families are also invited to dress as a knight, prince, princess or another medieval character if they wish.
Sword School sessions will take place at 11am and 2pm. Each session is limited to 20 children, and booking is required on the day. The cost is £1 per child.
Where activities will take place
The activities will be based in the Garden Pavilion at the top of the Walled Garden, with entry and exit through Museum Reception. Sword School will take place on the Walled Garden lawn, weather permitting.
The event is aimed at families with children aged five and over. Children must be accompanied by a parent or carer, although adults can join in too.
Historical reenactors Keith Errington and Nimue Brown will take part alongside members of the museum team. Errington has worked as a historical interpreter for History’s Maid and Time Tarts, performed at sites around the country and played historical roles in television series. Brown is a storyteller and musician with an interest in local history and folklore, and will also share insight into disability and medicine throughout history.
