Brimscombe & Thrupp manager Tim Bond said his side could take encouragement from their second-half response, despite the Lilywhites suffering a 4-2 home defeat against in-form Sharpness in Hellenic League Division One West.
The match, reported on September 17, 2026, left Brimscombe & Thrupp with five defeats from their opening seven games. The team currently sits at the bottom of what the report describes as the embryonic league table.
Sharpness takes control before half-time
Brimscombe & Thrupp made a positive start at home and created an early opportunity, but Sharpness soon took control. The visitors opened the scoring through James Tainton before Brad Hewer and Will Tainton added further goals.
By the interval, the Sharks were 3-0 ahead. Bond said his team had allowed Sharpness too much time and space, with the three goals reflecting poor decisions, a lack of alertness and insufficient pressure on the ball.
“We started the game really, really positively. We had an early chance where we probably should have scored, and that could have changed the game completely.”
Bond also said the first-half performance had fallen well below the standards the squad had set for itself. He admitted the players received strong words in the dressing room during the interval.
Two goals give Brimscombe hope
The Lilywhites responded more positively after the break. Daniel Parry scored an own goal to give Brimscombe & Thrupp a route back into the match, before Callum Blackford added a second for Bond’s side.
Those goals created a nervous finish and gave the hosts a platform while they chased an equaliser. Bond said the team was brighter, tighter both on and off the ball, and improved its quality in possession after half-time.
“As you can imagine, we had a few strong words at half-time, and to be fair to the lads, it completely changed in the second half.”
Brimscombe & Thrupp’s late push meant the team had to commit players forward. Sharpness eventually settled the contest when Mike Bryant scored in the sixth minute of added time.
Bond accepted that the visitors’ fourth goal came as his side took the risk of chasing the game. The late strike ended hopes of completing the comeback, although the manager felt the second-half display contained more positive signs.
“That led to us getting two late goals and gave us a bit of a platform. Unfortunately, it was probably a little bit too late to get anything from the game.”
Bond calls for defensive improvement
The result continues a difficult opening period for Brimscombe & Thrupp, who have now lost five of their first seven league matches. Bond said the recurring problem was that his team had been giving itself too much to do during games.
He maintained that the squad has the ability to improve, but said the players must fine-tune the team’s balance and stop conceding goals. His immediate focus is on correcting the defensive issues that contributed to the three-goal half-time deficit against Sharpness.
“There are certainly a lot more positives to take from the second half. But ultimately, we find ourselves in a position, like most of the games so far, where we’re giving ourselves far too much to do.”
Bond said the team’s response after the interval showed what it can produce, but stressed that the improvement must come earlier in matches if Brimscombe & Thrupp are to change their position at the foot of the table.
“Our squad has the ability. We know that. We just need to fine-tune things, get the balance right and, most importantly, start making sure we stop leaking goals.”
