Forest Green Rovers surrendered a two-goal advantage as Harrogate Town came from behind to draw 2-2 in a pulsating lunchtime encounter on October 31, 2026.
Rovers appeared to be in control at half-time after Neil Kengni and Liverpool loanee Kyle Kelly put the hosts 2-0 ahead. However, Harrogate changed the momentum after the interval, scoring twice in five minutes through Lewis Payne and Ellis Taylor to take a point back to Yorkshire.
The result left Forest Green coach Jonathan Gould frustrated. Gould, the son of legendary manager Bobby Gould, is part of a temporary management team alongside Josh Bowen and Yan Klukowski. He believed Rovers had let victory slip away, while still acknowledging the quality of their opponents.
“Definitely two points dropped against a very, very good side. Their goalkeeper made an absolute worldie onto the post from Jayden’s (Clarke) free-kick, and we had a couple of other great chances to put the game to bed, but we didn’t.”
Rovers make a flying start
Forest Green needed only seven minutes to take the lead. Kengni found the net with a crisp strike from 25 yards, giving Rovers the early advantage.
The hosts almost doubled their lead moments later when Will Grigg threatened, but Bolton loanee Luke Hutchinson spread himself well to make the save. Forest Green continued to press during an intense opening period, with Tate Campbell seeing an effort ricochet off the Harrogate post.
Grigg led the line effectively as Rovers looked dangerous, although Harrogate also created chances during the fast-paced first half. Ellis Taylor struck the top of Luke McNicholas’s crossbar, while the Forest Green goalkeeper came sharply off his line to smother the ball at the feet of the advancing Josh Hmani.
Forest Green eventually added a second goal in first-half stoppage time. Bryan Ifeanyi created the opportunity and Kelly stabbed the ball home, sending Rovers into the interval with a 2-0 lead.
Harrogate change the game after the break
Harrogate began the second half positively. McNicholas denied Bradley Dolaghan immediately after the restart, but the visitors continued to apply pressure and soon reduced their deficit.
Payne pounced in the 52nd minute to make it 2-1. Five minutes later, Hmani put the ball on a plate for Taylor, who finished to level the score and complete a remarkable turnaround.
Gould said the decisive spell had exposed a lack of discipline and ruthlessness from his side, despite instructions given to the players at half-time.
“Two super goals, and then we just dropped off for seven, eight minutes in the second half. Our words to the boys were discipline and be ruthless, and your ruthlessness is at both ends of the box, and we just didn’t show that in those seven minutes.”
Harrogate nearly went on to complete the comeback. With 15 minutes remaining, Taylor had an opportunity to put the visitors ahead but planted a free header into the grateful arms of McNicholas when the chance appeared easier to score.
Forest Green also had a late opportunity to reclaim the lead. With three minutes remaining, Clarke delivered a free-kick that Hutchinson touched onto the crossbar.
Bookings and match statistics
The closing stages became increasingly animated. Forest Green coach Bowen and Harrogate assistant manager Paul Thirlwell were both shown yellow cards after their reactions to a foul on Forest Green substitute James Berry and the subsequent booking of Lewis Cass.
Harrogate manager Simon Weaver praised his team’s response, particularly after the side had lost in midweek to the nine men of Carlisle United.
“They picked themselves back up and grabbed the game right from kick-off at the start of the second half.”
The final score was Forest Green Rovers 2, Harrogate Town 2. Kengni scored in the seventh minute and Kelly in first-half stoppage time, while Payne struck in the 52nd minute and Taylor equalised in the 57th.
There were 1,437 people in attendance. Payne, Harrogate’s right-back, was named star man, and the match received a four-out-of-five rating.
Forest Green registered six shots on target compared with Harrogate’s eight. Both sides had two shots off target and four corners. The disciplinary count was three yellow cards for Harrogate and none for Forest Green, with no red cards shown.
