Robbie Savage is set to be officially unveiled as the new manager of Peterborough United after leaving Forest Green Rovers, bringing his spell at The New Lawn to an end.
Peterborough United has arranged a press conference for 1pm on Friday, October 2, 2026, when Savage is expected to be confirmed as the League One club’s new boss.
The move follows negotiations between Forest Green sporting director Mark Bowen and Peterborough director of football Barry Fry, who agreed a compensation package for the League One club to obtain Savage’s services.
Why Savage is leaving Forest Green
Forest Green chairman Dale Vince confirmed on Tuesday that Savage had been given permission to speak to Peterborough. Vince said the former Wales international wanted to leave for personal reasons, which the club understood and respected.
“We have given Robbie Savage permission to speak to Peterborough.”
“He wanted to leave the club for personal reasons, reasons which we understand and respect.”
“He’s been offered the job, and we’re now in a negotiation with Peterborough on the terms.”
“We wish Robbie the very best.”
Savage had been under contract at Forest Green, having taken charge in 2025. His departure follows what has been described as a remarkable week of negotiations for the former Premier League player.
Forest Green now searching for a manager
Savage’s move leaves Forest Green looking for a new permanent manager. In the meantime, goalkeeper coach Jonathan Gould and coaches Yan Klukowski and Josh Bowen are sharing managerial duties on an interim basis.
The change comes during a busy period for the club, with Forest Green having recently been linked with several possible successors. Recent names mentioned in connection with the vacancy include former York City boss Stuart Maynard and Mark Hughes, while the club’s interim coaching arrangement remains in place.
Possible first match against former club
Savage’s return to League One could begin with a high-profile fixture against his former club Leicester City. His first game for Peterborough could come at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on Saturday, October 10.
That match is only a potential first fixture, but it would give Savage an immediate reunion with Leicester if he completes the move and takes charge in time.
