Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage has emerged as a potential contender for the vacant Peterborough United job after Peterborough dismissed Luke Williams following a defeat to Doncaster Rovers.
The development comes as Savage prepares to take Forest Green to Sutton United. His name has been linked with the vacancy at Peterborough’s London Road ground, with chairman Darragh MacAnthony described as a long-standing admirer of the Rovers boss.
Why Savage is being considered
Peterborough are currently 23rd in League One. Williams was dismissed less than two hours after Saturday’s defeat to Doncaster, leaving one of the division’s ambitious clubs searching for a new manager.
Savage joined Forest Green from Macclesfield in 2025 on a four-year deal. He made an immediate impact by guiding Rovers into the National League play-offs during his first season in charge.
Forest Green narrowly missed out on promotion after an extra-time defeat to Boreham Wood in the play-off eliminator. Savage has nevertheless continued developing a team based around an attacking, front-foot style of football.
Savage’s progress at Forest Green
The Rovers manager has also been credited with helping the club identify talent from a range of sources. Those players have included Premier League youngsters arriving on loan and footballers emerging from the lower levels of the game.
That recruitment approach has already helped Forest Green generate significant transfer value. Laurent Mendy, one of the club’s standout talents, left this season to join Scottish Premiership side Hearts in a deal worth around £1 million.
Savage has overseen the development of several young players during his time at the New Lawn. He has also helped Forest Green compete towards the top end of the National League while cutting the club’s budget.
At the club’s senior level, Savage has forged a strong working relationship with owner Dale Vince, vice-chairman Asif Rehmanwala and sporting director Mark Bowen.
There has been no confirmation that Savage will leave Forest Green, and his immediate focus is the trip to Sutton United. However, Peterborough’s decision to dismiss Williams has opened a vacancy at a League One club with ambitions of its own, putting the Forest Green manager among those linked with the role.
