Robbie Savage could make his first League One appearance as Peterborough United boss against former club Leicester City, creating an immediate reunion at the King Power Stadium if his proposed move is completed.
The fixture is scheduled for Saturday, October 10. It would come only days after Forest Green Rovers owner Dale Vince announced that Savage was leaving the club to join Peterborough United.
However, the move had not been officially confirmed by Peterborough at the time of the report. That means Savage’s possible appearance in the dugout for the Leicester match remains dependent on the appointment being completed.
Potential first Peterborough match
If confirmed, the Leicester trip would give Savage a demanding opening assignment in his new role. It would also take him back to the club where he built a strong reputation during his playing career.
The potential meeting follows a week of change at Forest Green, where Vince announced Savage’s departure. Peterborough, known as Posh, had yet to formally confirm that Savage would take charge, despite the announcement that he was leaving the Gloucestershire club to join them.
The proposed game is therefore significant for both its timing and its opponent. Savage could take charge of Peterborough in his first League One game against a side for whom he made more than 200 appearances.
Savage’s Leicester City playing career
Savage joined Leicester City from Crewe Alexandra in 1997. During his time with the Foxes, the Welshman made 204 appearances and helped the club win the League Cup in 2000.
His Leicester spell ended in 2002, when he moved to Birmingham City for £2.5 million. At Birmingham, he was appointed captain by manager Steve Bruce.
The possible fixture would consequently bring Savage back to Leicester in a different capacity. Instead of returning as a former player, he could be leading Peterborough in what would potentially be his first League One match in charge.
The October 10 date remains the key next step, but the match-up cannot be treated as confirmed until Peterborough officially announces Savage’s appointment.
