A Nailsworth butcher is encouraging shoppers to try seasonal game with a £25 offer featuring pheasants, partridges and venison.
Country Quality Meat, at 10 Old Market, Nailsworth, has welcomed its first freshly dressed pheasants and partridges of the season. The business said the offer is intended to give customers the chance to cook traditional British game dishes at home while supplies are available.
What is included in the £25 offer?
For £25, customers receive:
- One brace of pheasants, meaning two birds
- One brace of partridges, also meaning two birds
- 1lb, or 454g, of diced venison
- 1lb, or 454g, of frozen minced venison
The promotion runs until the end of November, while stocks last. Country Quality Meat plans to stock pheasants and partridges throughout the game season, and said it will expand the range as supplies become more plentiful.
Further products expected to join the selection include diced pheasant and stuffed pheasant breast.
Why the butcher wants more customers to try game
Paul Dowdeswell of Country Quality Meat said pheasant and partridge are currently among the shop’s worst-selling game meats, despite the business wanting to introduce them to more customers.
“Pheasants and partridges are probably our worst-selling game meats, but every year we tell ourselves we’re going to try to sell more because they really are worth discovering.”
He said game could appeal to people looking for something different for the dinner table, while pheasant costs roughly the same per pound as chicken.
“People are often looking for something different to put on the dinner table, and game is a fantastic option. Pheasant, in particular, costs roughly the same pound for pound as chicken, so it can be an affordable alternative for anyone wanting to try something new.”
Dowdeswell also highlighted the range of meals that can be made with the meat, including a traditional roast pheasant, a partridge supper or a casserole as the weather becomes colder.
“Game birds have a wonderful flavour and offer plenty of possibilities in the kitchen, whether you fancy a traditional roast pheasant, a partridge supper or a warming casserole as the weather gets colder.”
He said home cooks do not need to be expert chefs to prepare game, with online recipes offering ideas ranging from simple roasts to casseroles.
“You don’t need to be an expert chef to cook game. There are so many recipes out there, and you can keep things simple with a roast or try something different with a casserole. We’d love to see more people giving pheasant and partridge a go.”
