Julie Kirby has retired from Stonehouse Pharmacy after 37 years at the business, bringing to an end a career that began as a part-time shop assistant and developed into a role as Pharmacy Manager.
She first joined the Stonehouse pharmacy in 1989, covering the lunchtime shift under Mr Wilcox. Her early work was part-time, but she continued to progress as the business changed hands and her experience grew.
Mike and Sally Buxton took over the pharmacy in December 1992. During their ownership, Julie became shop senior before moving into the dispensary, where she trained as a pharmacy technician. She studied at home while raising her two young children, combining family responsibilities with the training needed to advance her career.
A career built through changing ownership
Julie continued working under Mr Buxton until his retirement in 2006. The Shaunak family then took over the business, and Julie remained at the pharmacy while building further knowledge and experience.
She eventually became Pharmacy Manager, completing a progression from the lunchtime shop floor to a senior position at the pharmacy. Across those years, her work brought her into contact with generations of customers in Stonehouse.
The pharmacy described Julie as a valued and trusted member of the community. Her professionalism, extensive knowledge and friendly manner meant she was known not only for her formal responsibilities but also for the help and advice she offered to customers.
Her kindness and support are expected to be missed by colleagues and local residents. The source said her contribution had made a lasting impression on people who had come to rely on her during her long association with the business.
Retirement plans include family and Madrid trips
Julie’s retirement will give her more time with her husband, Dave, and her son, Ben, and his family. She is also planning more frequent trips to Madrid to visit her daughter, Lisa.
Past and present colleagues are getting together on Monday to mark her retirement. The gathering is intended to give them an opportunity to raise a glass, share memories and wish Julie well as she begins the next chapter of her life.
Her departure marks the end of a 37-year connection with Stonehouse Pharmacy. From her first lunchtime shift in 1989, through technician training and changes in ownership, Julie developed a career centred on pharmacy knowledge and relationships with local customers.
The celebration will recognise both the length of her service and the wider contribution she made to the Stonehouse community. Julie now leaves the pharmacy with colleagues and residents thanking her for the work, advice and commitment she provided over nearly four decades.
