Forest Green Rovers have added considerable experience to their youthful squad with the signing of striker Will Grigg from Chesterfield on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old has agreed a contract at The New Lawn until June 2028. He goes straight into the squad for Forest Green’s visit to face Barrow in Cumbria on Saturday, giving manager Yan Klukowski the option of involving the new arrival immediately.

Grigg’s move brings an established Football League forward to the Stroud-area club. He has made more than 500 appearances in the English Football League and has scored 192 career goals, according to the announcement of his arrival.

A career across the English Football League

The striker’s previous clubs include Walsall, Brentford, MK Dons, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, Rotherham United and Chesterfield. His career has included a number of high-profile moments, most notably during his time with Wigan.

In 2018, Grigg scored the only goal when Wigan Athletic famously knocked Manchester City out of the FA Cup. The result was a major cup upset and remains one of the best-known goals of his career.

Grigg also represented Northern Ireland at senior level. He made his international debut in 2012 and went on to win 12 caps, scoring three goals for his country.

Recent success at Chesterfield

Grigg joined Chesterfield in 2023 and made more than 100 appearances for the club between 2023 and 2026. The source records that he scored 43 times during that period.

A separate section of the announcement gives his total contribution to the Spireites as 42 goals. Both figures are retained here because the supplied report does not explain the difference between them.

Grigg was part of the Chesterfield side that won the National League title in 2024. That success secured the club’s return to the Football League.

His Chesterfield contract was renewed last year and had been due to run until next summer. He had also been linked with a move to Shrewsbury Town before completing his transfer to Forest Green.

The signing gives Forest Green a forward with extensive experience at professional and international level while the club continues to develop a youthful squad. Grigg’s first possible appearance for the club could come against Barrow on Saturday, with his Forest Green contract running through to the summer of 2028.
