Forest Green Rovers suffered a damaging 4-2 home defeat against struggling Hartlepool United in the National League on October 11, 2026, after conceding four goals in a match coach Yan Klukowski said left him dissatisfied with the team’s defensive performance.
Hartlepool established control through two goals apiece from Jordan Hugill and Nathan Sheron. Forest Green responded after the interval with goals from Kyle McAllister and Omari Patrick, but Sheron struck again with two minutes remaining to secure all three points for the visitors.
Penalty gives Hartlepool half-time lead
The first half appeared to be heading towards a goalless conclusion before Hartlepool were awarded a penalty in stoppage time. Hugill took responsibility from 12 yards and converted past Forest Green goalkeeper Ethan Ross, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead at the break.
Klukowski said Forest Green believed the decision was a coming together rather than a clear penalty. He felt conceding just before half-time affected the hosts and said they did not respond well enough when the second half began.
Hartlepool, playing with renewed energy after manager Pete Wild had completed his first full week in charge, extended their advantage only minutes into the second period. Sheron arrived at the back post to head in and put the visitors 2-0 ahead.
Hugill then doubled his personal tally in the 56th minute. His long-range effort travelled beyond Ross and gave Hartlepool a three-goal advantage, leaving Forest Green facing a heavy home defeat.
Rovers rally before late setback
Forest Green did not surrender immediately. The hosts scored twice in a five-minute spell to give themselves a route back into the match.
McAllister reduced the deficit in the 64th minute. Patrick then scored five minutes later, with the match report recording McAllister’s goal as a penalty and Patrick’s as the other Forest Green goal. The response brought the score to 3-2 and briefly raised the possibility of an unlikely recovery.
Klukowski praised the character shown in getting back into the contest, but said the team’s choices in the final stages worked against them. He argued that Forest Green took too many shots from distance when they needed to find an additional pass or combination in attacking areas.
Hartlepool survived the late pressure and settled the match in the 87th minute. Sheron completed his double with a powerful effort from distance, sending the away side home with a 4-2 victory.
Klukowski points to defensive problems
Klukowski said Forest Green could not expect to win after conceding four times at home in a National League fixture. He also acknowledged that Hartlepool were energetic and direct, causing problems through their first contacts and second balls.
He felt Forest Green had moved the ball well but lacked quality with the final pass and did not show enough movement in the penalty area. The coach also said the team’s reaction to the disputed penalty and the early second-half goal was not strong enough.
Hartlepool manager Wild was particularly pleased with his team’s work during the closing stages. As Forest Green pressed for another goal, Hartlepool defended deeply and protected their lead from the 75th minute through to the 95th.
Wild said his players had been warned in the hotel about the need to defend low under pressure. He described that part of the game as the most pleasing aspect of the victory and said he was delighted for the Hartlepool supporters, players and staff.
Match statistics and Forest Green line-up
Forest Green finished with eight shots on target, compared with seven for Hartlepool, but the hosts also had 12 efforts off target while the visitors had three. Rovers won nine corners to Hartlepool’s five. The game produced two yellow cards for Forest Green and three for Hartlepool, with no red cards.
Referee James Oldham took charge, while Sheron was named Hartlepool’s star man with a rating of four out of five.
Forest Green lined up with Ross in goal behind a defence of Abrefa, Ajayi, McIntyre and Sass. Clarke and Campbell started in midfield, with McAllister, Kelly and Etaluku supporting Marquez. Substitutes included Kengni, Haughton, Patrick and Mellor, while McNicholas, Pemberton and Mabete were not used.
Hartlepool’s starting side featured Thompson, Eccleston, McNally, Hunter and Sheron in defence, with Charman, Deeming, Earing and Ilunga across midfield. Popov partnered Hugill in attack. Thornton, Nolan, Clark and Harris were used as substitutes, while Fisher, Penman and Bondo remained unused.
Chesham United next for Rovers
Forest Green’s next fixture is an away trip to National League South side Chesham United in the FA Cup. Chesham will enter the tie after a 5-0 league defeat against Chelmsford United, whose manager is former Forest Green boss Mark Cooper.
