Animal lovers in Gloucestershire are being asked to help give 136 former commercial laying hens a happy retirement at two British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) rehoming events in Berkeley.

The first event will take place on Saturday 24 October, when 62 former free-range laying hens will be available. A second event follows on Sunday 25 October, offering 74 hens retiring from caged egg production.

Anyone hoping to adopt must book in advance. Bookings close at 3pm on Friday 23 October, so prospective henkeepers will need to register before the deadline.

Why the hens need homes

The hens are reaching the end of their commercial laying lives, often at about 18 months old. However, the BHWT says they can still have years of retirement ahead of them once they leave commercial production.

In a home setting, the hens can explore, dust-bathe and scratch for treats. The charity says they can also bring considerable character to a garden.

Gloucestershire henkeeper and BHWT volunteer Natalie Winchurch has supplied photographs showing hens exploring a colourful autumn pumpkin display, as well as a picture of herself holding two of her companions.

“Hens are funny, friendly, full of personality and much more affectionate than people realise. Seeing them change once they have fresh air, room to move and kindness is incredible. They make amazing pets.”

Andy Hill of the British Hen Welfare Trust said people were often surprised by the enjoyment hens could bring, describing them as curious animals that liked routine. He added that they could still produce an occasional egg.

“People are often surprised by how much joy hens bring. They’re funny, curious little characters, they love routine, and they’re genuinely a delight to care for. Plus, they’re still more than happy to pop out the occasional egg.”

What adopters need

People taking on hens will need a secure coop, suitable food, fresh water and a safe outdoor area. Hens are sociable and should be kept in groups, but the charity says a huge garden is not necessary for responsible henkeeping.

To book hens from Berkeley, adopters should visit the BHWT hen-adoption page, select the Berkeley rehoming date and follow the instructions. The charity’s Rehoming Team can also be contacted on 01884 860084.

Bookings close at 3pm on Friday 23 October. Further information and bookings are available at bhwt.org.uk/hen-adoption.
